What to Expect

Embark on a one-hour immersive cultural tour that runs from February 1st to October 31st, every Wednesday through Friday at 10:30 am and 2:00 pm. The tour features:

  • Aboriginal Bush Medicine: Learn about the traditional medicinal uses of native plants.
  • Plant and Bird Knowledge: Gain insights into the local flora and fauna.
  • Dot Painting and Artefact Making: Observe the creation of traditional dot paintings and wooden artefacts like spears and boomerangs.
  • Clapping Stick Making: Watch the crafting of these musical instruments.
  • Bush Tucker: Sample seasonal bush foods and see how organic seeds are used for jewellery making.

Where It Takes Place?

Karrke Aboriginal Cultural Experience and Tours is located on the southeastern fringes of Watarrka National Park, about 5 hours and 30 minutes southwest of Alice Springs. The site is just 2 kilometres from Kings Creek Station on the Luritja Highway and 34 kilometres from Kings Canyon Resort. Look for the prominent Karrke sign and follow the dirt road to the site.

Karrke Aboriginal Cultural Experience and Tours is an established Aboriginal owned and operated business operating 10 months of the year. They offer a one hour cultural experience as lived by the local Luritja and Pertame (Southern Aranda) people of the Central Australia region.

The tour covers Aboriginal bush medicine use, plant and bird knowledge, Aboriginal dot painting weapon making (including spears and boomerangs), clapping Stick making, bush tucker gathered seasonally and organic seeds used for jewellery making.
The Karrke Aboriginal Cultural Experience and Tours offers a unique and authentic Aboriginal cultural immersion within Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) in the Northern Territory.

Meet the Guides

  • Peter Abbott: A Western Aranda/Pertame man, Peter is the Director and Cultural Leader at Karrke. He is passionate about sharing his cultural heritage and the natural beauty of Watarrka National Park.
  • Christine Breaden: Christine is a Luritja woman, a traditional owner of the Wanmarra Community, and a talented artist skilled in dot painting and traditional artefact making.
  • Natasha Abbott: The Operations Manager and a cultural tour guide, Natasha imparts knowledge of Pertame and Luritja/Mutitjarra heritage to visitors and younger generations.
